Daily DevotionalsThere is a further comfort in the assurance of salvation, in addition to the working of God in us by His Spirit. There is the outward evidence of that, the evidence that God is performing salvation in us. Assurance of salvation is not based on the cold fact that God is good or that God is gracious or the vague idea that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life. Paul’s joy in the Philippians was not based on a mere name that they had of being Christians (Revelation 3:1). In other words, Paul was not rejoicing in a mere profession without evidence of true possession of grace. There was clear evidence that something of deep spiritual value had begun in the Christians at Philippi and that there had been a transformation of heart that enabled them to live unto God. It was this evidence that gave Paul the confidence in their salvation. Christian, look for this evidence and rejoice in the work God has begun in you.
