Reading: “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”Romans 7:24–25

In these verses Paul agonizes over his sin. But like the prisoner of war, he does not rest in his chains with a defeatist attitude or acceptance: “This is my lot in life.” No! Paul expresses the longing of every Christian to be free from the strength of indwelling sin: “Who shall deliver me from this body of death?”

This question articulates the heart-cry of every true child of God who feels his sin and his obnoxious propensity to sin. The answer is that the victory has been won in Christ. It is the Spirit of Christ that makes it real to us and effective in us by faith: “Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.”
