Reading: “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” —Ephesians 4:24

“Created in holiness”—what an amazing statement and description of those who have experienced the new birth! The governing principle of holiness, which Adam lost at the fall, was returned to him in regeneration. The dominion of sin has been broken and holiness now reigns and affects every aspect of my life. In Christ I am an entirely new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17), and that newness spills over into every area of life. In the same way that we are governed by civil laws, the Christian is now governed by a law within him, the “law of holiness,” a living principle working in every part of him. Hebrews 10:16 reads, “I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them.” Let us therefore exercise every part of our being for the glory of our creator.

To be holy, then, I must look to God through His Son Jesus Christ—I cannot be anything apart from Him. Only when I have been united to a holy God through Christ can I obey the command “be ye holy.” I cannot be holy if I do not know Him for holiness is from Him. And if I am not holy I cannot be happy for happiness is in holiness.
