Reading: “From this day will I bless you.”—Haggai 2:19
What day, Christian, is a memorable day to you, as the beginning of blessings? No doubt it is from everlasting when the Lord blessed His people, by election in Jesus. But the commencement of your personal enjoyment of those blessings was at the time the Lord graciously laid the foundation of His spiritual temple in you—that was a blessed, gracious, and happy day, when the Lord “made thee willing in the day of his power?” (Psalm 110:3).
Blessed day never to be forgotten! A day of light, of life, a day of love and a day of the beginning of victory over death and hell, and the grave. A day also of liberty, of wonder, love and praise; when my eyes first saw the King in His beauty, and the whole soul was overpowered in the contemplation of the grace, the glory, the beauty, the loveliness, the suitableness, the all-sufficiency of His glorious Person and glorious work. A day of grace, a jubilee, a salvation day and the day of your marriage to Jesus.
From that day the Savior said He would bless you. And has He not done it? He has blessed you in temporal mercies, which were all forfeited in Adam, are now sweetly restored, blessed, and sanctified, in Jesus. Remember also, Christian, even your very crosses have the curse taken out of them by Jesus and your tears He remembers and saves in His bottle (Psalm 56:8).
As to spiritual blessings, God has blessed you with all in His dear Son. The Father has made over Himself, in Jesus, with all His love and favour. And Jesus is yours, with all His fullness, sweetness, and all-sufficiency. And God the Spirit, with all His gracious influences and comforts is yours. Jesus Himself has declared, that it is the Father’s own gracious will that He should give eternal life to as many as the Father has given Him, and therefore eternal life must be the sure portion of all His redeemed. Pause, Christian, and view the vast heritage into which you are received from the day of your new-birth in Jesus—and rejoice.
