The word 'gospel' simply means the "good news". The bad news is that the wrath of God hangs over a sinful world and every individual still in sin and rebellion against God. The good news is that your sin can be dealt with, and that you can have peace with God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1).
