Reading: “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee.” Psalm 55:22

i Patrick a Sinner 2So often when we think of this verse (or 1 Peter 5:7) and attempt to implement it in our lives we hold on to our cares with lingering reservation. They are still in our face and we still must deal with them on a human level!

What confidence it takes to say, “Every day I expect to be killed, betrayed, reduced to slavery, or whatever; but I fear none of these, because of the promises of Heaven; for I have cast myself into the hands of Almighty God who reigns everywhere, as the prophet says: ‘Cast your cares upon the Lord and He will sustain you’” (Confession, sec. 55). You might trust the love of God and the mercy of God, but only a heart that trusts the sovereignty of God can do this.

As you read Patrick’s Confession you realize the weight that Patrick carried, the kind of weight that Paul knew in the care of all the churches (2 Corinthians 11:28). It was all these cares—personal cares, church cares, family cares, and burdens—that he cast into the hand of almighty God who reigns everywhere. There is not an area of your life that He does not know and there is not a burden that He cannot carry.

Patrick cast every day into the hands of almighty God. As he awoke in the morning he knew that Lord reigned over that day and he rested in the comfort of this blessed thought.

Patrick cast his eternal destiny into the almighty hands of God. Daily, he expected to be killed, but death held no sting and the grave no victory because his soul was in the hands of almighty God. What a safe place to be, not only to have the cares of your life carried by Him but to have the comfort of knowing that your soul is entrusted to the Almighty God.
