Daily DevotionalsReading: “The righteousness of God in him.”2 Corinthians  5:21

If Jesus is called “the Lord our righteousness,” and, since He is the husband of His people, surely His wife would be called by her husband’s name. She shall be called so because it is her husband’s name, “the Lord our righteousness.” And as He became sin for her, when He knew no sin; so she, when she knew no righteousness, shall be righteousness, even “the righteousness of God in him.”

Now, seeing that these things are certain, sure, and unquestionable, do thou follow up the transporting meditation in every way, and by every way, and by every consideration, in which the blessedness of it is confirmed and assured. Married to Jesus, you have interest in all He has as Mediator, as the glorious Head of His body, the church. And indeed, it is such a union and oneness, as nothing in nature can fully represent; “For he that is joined to the Lord is one spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:17). It infinitely transcends the marriage union, which is only in natural things, and at death is dissolved; for this union is spiritual and continues for ever.

Jesus says, “I will betroth thee to me forever” (Hosea 2:19). Never lose sight of this high union, and the infinitely precious blessings to which you are entitled. And while you are called by His name, see that you have a conformity to His image. What Jesus loves, you should love; and what He hates, you should also hate. Let His people be your people; and His God and Father yours also. And from being one with Him in heart, in mind, in sympathy, and affection; receiving life from Him, living on Him, and being in Him; then He will be everything to you, of grace in this life, and of glory in the life which is to come.
