Reading: “Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.”—Jeremiah 2:11

Pause over these words! Was it ever known that any nation changed their dunghill gods for others? Such regard had they for whatever ignorance had set up, that the veneration never after ceased. But Israel, above every other nation of the earth, manifested folly, and even exceeded the most senseless and stupid of men.

Christian, do you not see your self in Israel’s folly? Was there ever one less deserving than yourself when the Lord first called you? A transgressor from the womb, as the Lord knew you! And yet this did not prevent the Lord from calling you. He loved you because he would love you; gave you His Christ, His Holy Spirit, and the adoption of a son.

What returns have you made to Him? How often since have your backslidings, coldness, and wandering departures been like Israel? What vanity, what pursuit, what unprofitable employment, have at times been preferred to your God? How do I see my daily, hourly, continual need of Him—Keep me, Lord, near you; for without you I am nothing.
