Reading: “But for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.” —Genesis 2:20

Mark what is here said, for sure it is a sweet scripture. Amidst all the works of God, “there was not one that could be found an help meet for man.” The inferior creatures could indeed minister to his bodily comfort, but not to his heart and mind. Eve herself with all her loveliness also failed in this by her disobedience. Both the woman and her husband then, alike needed this help to the soul. How refreshing is the thought, and what a lovely view does it give us of God’s grace and mercy, that in the seed of the woman, help in the fullest sense of the word, was found both for time and eternity.

Jesus in our nature took us for His partner, as Adam took Eve. We have failed as Eve failed Adam, but He remained faithful and true and pure and has redeemed us from the curse that our first parents brought us into.

Pause then, and add this thought to your mind: the same love which fitted you with an help-meet in a Saviour, will continue to provide you with the supply of all your need. Oh, that we would never lose sight of this certain truth. If we can hold this thought secure we will have the fittest frame of mind and of body, the fittest yoke-fellow in Christ, the best circumstances; in short, the greatest mercies, and yes, the most suited trials, because every thing is made subservient to the divine glory in Jesus. Sweet thought! “He that spared not his own Son, will with him also freely give us all things.”

“To encounter Christ is to touch reality and experience transcendence. He gives us a sense of self-worth or personal significance, because He assures us of God’s love for us. He sets us free from guilt because He died for us … and from paralyzing fear because He reigns.… He gives meaning to marriage and home, work and leisure, personhood and citizenship.”John Stott
