Reading: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”—2 Peter 3:18

There are two things the Christian needs to remember about sanctification. First, sanctification cannot be lost. This is the great truth that Paul outlines in Hebrews 10:10: “We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Second, sanctification is progressive. Peter says, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). Here Paul presents the principle of sanctification “sanctified in Christ,” and Peter speaks of the onward progression of sanctification (growing in grace). As Christians we often have good intentions to be holy, but we continually fail. But be encouraged, God does not accept us on the basis of our sanctification, He accepts us on the grounds of our justification. This is grace!
