On Saturday, July 23 Amy Winehouse – singer, musician, multi-millionaire and popular celebrity was found dead in her London home aged 27. Winehouse hit the music scene in her late teens and enjoyed phenomenal ‘success’, but her life was marred by alcohol and drugs. In a few short years she went from a healthy vibrant young woman to an ill, lonely and sad figure. In the final analysis the world she lived for had nothing to offer her. It couldn’t meet her greatest need.

The ‘world’– the world of sin and godlessness cannot satisfy the soul. Only Christ can do that. He is the fount of living water and those who drink of Him never thirst again. The apostle John had clear counsel on this theme when he said, (1 John 2:15-17) “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof; but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.” The Amy Winehouse story is a tragic one, yet so many seem intent on following it. Christ’s question should cause them to stop and think again: “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?”
