Daily Devotionals: (4th Nov.) What Should I Do Now?

Reading: And David came to Saul, and stood before him. 1 Samuel 16:21

Have you ever been asked, “How has God worked in your life this week?” Perhaps you would be stuck for an answer because, quite frankly, you are not sure where He has worked. You may know the confessional statement that God “works all things according to the counsel of His will,” but you have no conscious experience of it. David’s life is an illustration of God working in the midst of the ordinary happenings of life to bring about His purpose. We often look for God in the big things in life and ignore the little things. We look for God in the plan of life and miss Him in the particulars.

David had been called to reign over Israel, but the time had not yet arrived for him to occupy the throne. The poor and unsophisticated shepherd boy needed training. Observe then how the providence of God ordered it that for a season he should frequent the royal court, thus having opportunity to note the ways and protocol, observe the corruptions, and discover the needs of royal life. This opportunity was brought about without any scheming or effort on David’s part or that of his friends. God opened the door into the palace without David having to force it or even so much as knock on it.

If God wants you in the palace, or in mission work, or in vocational ministry, or in a certain secular employment, DON’T FORCE IT. If God will have you somewhere, He will bring you there. You might ask, “What should I do now?” Do what David did: he served where he was until the king’s courtiers came and made it such that he could do nothing else but go.

God has foreordained the works to which He has called you. He has been ahead of you preparing the place to which you are coming and manipulating all the resources of the universe in order that the work you do may be a part of His whole great and gracious work —G. Campbell Morgan.
